Introduction: Hollins has long had a reputation for strength and innovation in the arts. Hollins art and art history majors are prepared to make their mark as artists, art historians, museum curators, art educators, and volunteers. The Fiske Guide to Getting into the Right College lauds Hollins as one of only 15 small universities strong in art and design. The art department has one of the most comprehensive programs offered at a small university. The department’s strength comes from a faculty of recognized artists, scholars, and dedicated teachers, who take pride in the success students encounter as they work through aesthetic and scholarly problems. The new Richard Wetherill Visual Arts Center, which opened in 2004, centralizes all of Hollins’ programs in studio art, art history, and film and photography. It also houses the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum, named a Museum Partner by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA).
