When thinking of art, one might immediately think of New York City and its world-renowned museums, or the countless movies and television shows filmed there, or the vibrant music scene, not to mention Broadway, Lincoln Center, Madison Avenue advertising agencies, or the numerous publishing companies headquartered there.
But New York's art scene extends well beyond the island of Manhattan, and jobs in the art industry are in demand all over the state. A graphic designer, for instance, can expect to see a 10.4% increase through 2012 in the number of job openings, while positions for fine artists are expected to increase by 11.8%.

Introduction: Since 1887, Pratt has been committed to educating creative professional leaders through programs in architecture, art, and design. Pratt now offers programs in creative writing, film, fashion, art education, and critical and visual studies and more in addition. Courses are taught by some of the top architects, designers, writers, and artists in New York, and all programs give students an opportunity to begin specialized studies in their first year. Pratt's curriculum balances creative application and theory with a solid liberal arts foundation for the most comprehensive education possible. Situated on an enclosed, 25-acre tree-lined campus in Brooklyn, Pratt offers an intimate college experience, and also has a campus in Manhattan for two-year programs and a partnership with the Munson-Williams-Proctor Art Institute in Utica. Introduction: New York is the center of film production, and the Academy is located in the heart of it all. Overlooking Union Square Park in Manhattan, our students are only a short walk, or train ride, from all of the diverse neighborhoods that make up New York City. Greenwich Village, SoHo, Little Italy, Tribecca, Harlem, Chinatown, and Times Square are just a sampling of the atmosphere that surrounds our students. With the car horns, neon lights, music, parks, and millions of people, New York is not only the setting for their films, but also evident in the lives of their characters.

Introduction: The Gallatin School of Individualized Study is an innovative and interdisciplinary graduate program at New York University for the focused and disciplined student who wishes to cross the boundaries of education by creating a unique program of study. The Gallatin student works closely with a faculty adviser to design a tailor-made M.A. degree that can draw from several disciplines in the various NYU graduate schools. All courses selected must be integrated around a particular theme, artistic endeavor, or professional activity. The Gallatin student also has the option to include independent studies, tutorials, internships, and private lessons in the arts as part of the curriculum. While Gallatin is a flexible program, certain required courses ensure that our students are well prepared to pursue a self-designed study. A master¹s thesis is the final requirement and may be in the form of an extended research paper, an artistic work, or a professional project.
