Technology could be labeled as the single-greatest contributor to any change in the art industry.

New technological developments have led to the creation of a variety of art-related software programs such as Adobe InDesign and AutoCAD, moving traditional hand-drawn illustrations and other documents to the computer.

Economic and technical changes have also moved New York City out of the forefront of the art industry. An increasingly high cost of living has turned off many budding artists, and, because scanners, software, and the Internet allow the real-time sharing of artwork, it is no longer necessary for artists to be physically present in New York City to market their work. While still the center of the commercial art industry, it is no longer the place to move to when launching a career.

The Internet has opened up a world of opportunity to freelance artists who use the myriad of job posting websites to find new work. Graphic artists and others working for the web, as well, are finding that the rapid expansion of the Internet are creating many new job opportunities.

As movies move more into the digital age, too, great employment opportunities exist for multimedia artists and animators. Many employers seek out those with an array of skills that offer great flexibility, such as those who can work with both print and online graphics, for example.
