The location that became New York City was settled by the Dutch in 1625 and originally named New Amsterdam. Traditionally known as "the Big Apple" and the "Gateway to America," the city of New York is now home to just over eight million people, in an area that covers 320 sq. miles, making it one of the most densely populated cities in America. The ethnic diversity of New York contributes to the rich opportunities open to visitors who come for opera, Broadway shows, jazz clubs, major sports events, and, of course, the chance to stroll down Fifth Avenue -- the mecca of shopping. The city is also a museum lover's dream, featuring every conceivable type of exhibition, including the American Museum of the Moving Image, which showcases films, television and digital media.

Unique and Inspiring Arts Environment

There are few cities in the U.S. that have such a strong community of artists. Creativity, innovation, and passion for the arts are everywhere, providing an exciting and inspiring environment for artists. Writer and photographer Michelle Jackson was captivated by NYC's energy on a visit to the city. "I went to New York with a friend right after graduating from college and I was awestruck. All the famous places I had read about and seen in movies were right there before my eyes."

It was a trip to Greenwich Village that particularly impacted Jackson. "In the Village, everyone was so artsy. Not really in a presumptuous way, but just as part of the culture. There were lofts and studios everywhere and all the people we talked with had some creative project they were involved with. The idea of living there and working in those surroundings appealed to me so much that I went home, packed my stuff and moved there."
