Miami art school A partnership between the wealthy Brickell and Tuttle families and railroad magnate Henry Flagler led to the opening of southern Florida, with Miami as its gateway, in 1895.

Miami and five smaller cities form a large metropolitan center of over four million people covering an area of 1945 sq. miles. The city of Miami (also known as the "Magic City") itself is home to just under 400,000 residents in 36 sq. miles. With an average annual temperature of 76F, Miami enjoys such attractions as the Venetian Pool where both Esther Williams and Johnny Weismuller trained for their Olympic performances. A city with a thriving arts scene, Miami also has over 125 arts and culture-related groups and attractions that appeal to artists, collectors, art students, and the general public, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, known for its provocative and innovative exhibitions.

Some other notable venues include the Miami Art Museum, which focuses on the art of the Western Hemisphere from the 1940s to the present, and the Rubell Family Collection, featuring one of the world's finest contemporary art collections from 1964 to date. The Wolfsonian showcases American and European decorative and fine arts produced between 1885-1945, and the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center provides a multi-arts developmental program for students and adults, including a visual arts gallery.

The list goes on with Bass Museum of Art, which offers an overview of major European paintings, sculptures and textiles, the Diaspora Vibe Gallery, featuring Caribbean and Latin American art, and the Coral Gables International Art Center.

Of particular interest to artists and those pursuing fashion careers is Miami's Design District. This unique, 18-square block area just north of downtown Miami and ten minutes from South Beach and the airport is fast becoming the center of the home furnishings and interior design industry in South Florida.

According to the District's website, Holly Hunt, Via Solferino, Fantini Mosaici/Emporio San Firenze, Forecast, Protomaster & Company, bulthaup, Ann Sacks, Campaniello/Cassina, Bussandri, British Khaki, Kartell, NOW, Poltrona Frau, and Mia Cucina are among the companies that have showrooms in the Miami Design District. A walking tour of the area on the second Thursday of each month provides an opportunity to learn more about the showrooms and artists galleries in this exciting district. A separate second-Saturday tour includes galleries in other parts of the city.

As the true arts mecca that it is, Miami has an impressive list of organizations and resources dedicated to the arts. There are so many groups and artists' organizations that a comprehensive list is not possible here. Some of the more well-known organizations include the Arts & Business Council, Arts for Learning/Miami, Dade Cultural Alliance, Diaspora Arts Coalition, and Miami Art Central. These groups help to sponsor a multitude of arts events, activities, venues, and learning opportunities including Art Basel, an internationally known art event held in Miami Beach that includes contemporary art shows and special exhibitions showcasing all areas of art including music, architecture, design and film.

film schools in Miami The Miami area also is becoming known for its video, film and photo production opportunities. In addition to the filming and educational activities that occur, the city hosts several well-attended film festivals including the Made In Miami Film Festival and the Miami International Film Festival.

Arts Education Opportunities

The list of schools that offer art degrees and programming is also quite impressive. The Miami-Dade Community College New World School of Arts is a unique entity created by the Florida Legislature in 1984 as a Center of Excellence in the visual and performing arts. It is based on collaborations between the University of Florida, Miami Dade College, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools. In addition to a variety of college-level visual arts degrees, it also allows students to earn their high school diploma.

Other accredited schools and colleges in the Miami area include the Miami International University of Art & Design, the Florida Career College - Miami Campus, Florida International University, Department of Visual Arts, and the University of Miami School of Architecture and their Department of Art and Art History.

These schools offer a variety of two- and four-year programs including Fine Arts degrees, Advertising degrees, Interior Design degrees, Graphic Design degrees, programming geared towards film education and photography careers, and preparation for web design and technology careers, architectural careers, and fashion careers. Some of these schools also offer master's degrees in art-related fields.

art student in Miami Visual art students also have an abundant list of alternative educational options. Other Miami schools, art centers and organizations that offer certificate programs and art workshops include the Lindsey Hopkins Tech Education Center, Industrial Education, Bakehouse Art Complex Workshops, Human Horizons Art School and Gallery, International Jewelry School And Gemology Institute, SCHO-LAS-TI-CA ART, Inc., and the School of Dressmaking.

The Miami area provides visual arts students with some of the most abundant and varied art opportunities in the United States. Its art culture is well developed and there are many galleries, design centers, arts education facilities, and other industry-related businesses that hire trained visual artists for a variety of interesting and exciting careers. Add in the warm climate, steamy social scene, and endless entertainment opportunities, and Miami becomes a top choice for many visual arts students.
