Introduction: The Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art's true purpose is to bring back to the forefront the incredulity, mastery and integrity inherent in FINE FIGURATIVE ART. What do we mean by Fine Figurative Art? We mean artwork like that of Rubens, Caravaggio, John Singer Sargent, Odd Nerdrum and Lucian Freud. We mean artwork that combines modern ideas with classical style and intensive training. Fine Figurative Art then, is a return to the era in which rigorous academic study was the norm, a time in which an artist was judged not only by the ideas they wished to convey, but also in the mastery they had of the human figure, color, perspective and composition. Our faculty is composed of different manners and levels of artists to accomodate different manners and levels of students. All of them, without fail, started from the same precipice--rigorous study from life for as long as it took to get there. And that is what the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art is all about. Introduction: Otis College of Art and Design is a four year BFA program that offers majors in six areas: Communication Arts, Digital Media, Environmental Design, Fashion Design, Fine Arts, and Toy Design. The cornerstone of the Otis program is the first year curriculum, which is called Foundation. Students from all majors take the core studio classes: drawing and composition, figure drawing, two and three dimensional design. In these integrated classes students build the art, design and creative skills and vocabulary that are the “foundation” of their subsequent studies and future work. Students enter their sophomore year well prepared to begin work in their major.
